November 5, 2019, Santa Rosa, CA, The Music Department of Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) presents a jazz concert by the Bennett Friedman Quartet on Friday, Nov. 22, at 8 pm in Newman Auditorium on the SRJC Santa Rosa campus. Pianist Aaron Garner, bassist Peter Barshay, and drummer Hamir Atwal will be featured.
Admission to the event is $15 general and $10 for students and seniors. There is a $4 fee for parking on campus. Tickets will be available at the door only. Proceeds from the concert benefit the SRJC Foundation Jazz Studies Fund.
The performance will feature works of John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, and a new composition by Bennett Friedman.
Pianist Aaron Garner teaches jazz improvisation, theory and piano at San Joaquin Delta College. He has performed with James Moody, Eddie Harris, Oscar Brown Jr., and the Woody Herman Band.
Peter Barshay has been featured on bass with Milt Jackson, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, and many other jazz greats. He has produced Pit of Fashion, an album that showcases his compositions.
Drummer Hamir Atwal is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, and has performed with Joe Lovano and Ben Goldberg, as well as many other major jazz artists. He has been guest clinician/teacher at Oberlin College, Peabody Conservatory, Stanford University and the California Jazz Conservatory.
Saxophonist Bennett Friedman has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Stanford Jazz Workshop, the San Jose Jazz Festival, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, the Monterey Bay Blues Festival, and the Russian River Jazz Festival. He has been featured as a soloist with Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Natalie Cole, and Marvin Gaye. Friedman has taught Jazz Studies at Santa Rosa Junior College since 1977. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant for jazz composition.
