At the Sonoma County Day of Remembrance on Santa Rosa Junior College’s Bailey Field, guests remembered those whom we have lost, celebrated community heroes, and supported each other in grieving, healing and helping neighbors in need. Organized by State Senator Mike McGuire, Mary Beth Falk of The Press Democrat and others, the event featured five members of Congress on campus, an historic first for SRJC: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, our Congressmen Jared Huffman and Mike Thompson, and Congresswomen Anna Eshoo and Zoe Lofgren.
Speaker Pelosi, Superintendent/President Frank Chong, Sonoma County Sheriff Rob Giordano, Santa Rosa Fire Chief Tony Gossner, CalFire Chief Ken Pimlott, Santa Rosa Mayor Chris Coursey, and interfaith leaders addressed the crowd. The ringing of the firefighter memorial bell on behalf of the 42 residents who died in the fires was powerful. The SRJC choir, Transcendence Theatre, the fire department color guard and bagpipes, and the honor guard from local law enforcement, all offered moving testaments to the guests.
