SRJC Theatre Arts reschedules inaugural show in newly renovated Burbank Auditorium

August 14, 2019, Santa Rosa, CA—The Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) Theatre Arts Department will hold its inaugural theatrical performance of “The Wedding Singer” in the newly renovated Burbank Auditorium in spring 2020. SRJC originally planned to host “The Sound of Music,” as the first show in the upgraded auditorium in fall 2019 but was forced to reschedule the inaugural show due to construction delays. “The Sound of Music” will now be held as a collaborative production with the Sonoma State University (SSU) theatre department in the Evert B. Person Theatre at SSU.
“We are thrilled to be opening with ‘The Wedding Singer,’ which is based on the hit Adam Sandler movie. This 1980’s throwback musical is sure to delight all those who actually lived through the 80s, and those who lived the big-hair dream through the movie,” Theatre Arts Department Chair/Artistic Director Leslie McCauley said. “Featuring raked seating, wider and more comfortable seats and improved sightlines, Burbank will still retain much of its historic charm, while ushering SRJC into a new era for the performing arts.”

The renovations of this 80-year-old building will also provide larger bathrooms, ADA access, and back-of-house production space updates and state-of-the-art lighting and audio-visual equipment that meets contemporary industry standards. A new Burbank Studio Theatre was also constructed as part of the project, which will facilitate a wider range of performance opportunities, including more experimental work. The $28 million renovation is funded by the Measure H bond, passed by voters in 2014.
SRJC President Frank Chong expressed appreciation for the community’s excitement about the inaugural show. “Our theatre performances are known for their professional quality and will be even more impressive in the updated theatre,” he said. “I can think of no better way to celebrate its completion than with an outstanding first performance.”
